The Syracuse New Times is hiring a General Assignment Reporter Intern to join our close-knit staff. The outlet has a focus on community journalism and seeks an intern with a passion for storytelling and exploring all things hyper-local.
The intern should be prepared to come to the office with a critical and creative mind, ready to tell the stories often missed in the daily-news drudge. Assignments could include such things as covering live music shows, the outcome of a big sports match, profiling new retailers and community leaders, events coverage, etc.
The intern will work closely with one of our senior writers to develop their skills and polish their stories. The senior writer will be both an editor and office mentor to the student intern for the duration of their involvement with the program.
Produce one to two stories per week for our print publication
Complete assigned stories and pitch own ideas in a timely fashion
Be a company brand ambassador when out in the field (interns will be presented with complimentary SNT-brand attire at the beginning of their employment)
Assist in the weekly story planning process
Assist in managing and compiling the online events calendar
Junior or senior college student studying journalism or public communications; or have demonstrated equivalent journalism reporting experience
Can work remotely if needed; up for discussion
This is an unpaid, for-credit internship but could lead to paid freelance/part-time/full-time opportunities.

Job Description: Culinary Intern must be able to plan, prep, set up and provide quality service in all areas of food production to include, but not limited to all menu items supplied by their respective kitchen. Culinary Intern must display a level of competency in all types of preparation and repetitive skills such as chopping, cleaning and plating with excellent speed and efficiency. Shows the highest initiative to get tasks completed to the chef’s specifications in a timely manner, will be able to follow established recipe and plating guide provided to exact specification and approval of Sous chef. Maintain and organize their station and equipment in a neat and orderly fashion to meet the Chef’s expectation. Maintain and contribute to a positive work environment.

We are seeking energetic, confidential and well-organized candidates who are comfortable with various computer programs. This is a flexible hour, part time position that has the potential of developing into full time.
Duties to include:
Preparation and submission of the weekly payroll
Enrolling new hires in the payroll and E-verify programs
Setting up personnel files for new hires
Running background check on new hires, as appropriate
Mediating conflict between staff members and addressing, investigating and following up on any staff concerns/complaints
Assisting with various clerical responsibilities
Conducting training for supervisory staff when needed to review policies, the handbook, hiring practices, etc.
Preferred candidates will have payroll preparation experience and knowledge of general HR practices. Candidates must be flexible, confidential and computer literate. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
